marti مرتي

Algerian Darja · noun

“marti” (مرتي) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning my wife, my spouse.

Meanings

  1. my wife, my spouse

Usage

Marti is the possessive form of mra (woman): "my wife", in the sense of spouse. The other persons are formed the same way: martek (your wife), martou (his wife). It is the most common and natural way for a man to speak of his wife in darja. The register is neutral and informal. In a more discreet or respectful register, some say "lfamilia", "mmalin dar" or "lmadame". Pitfall for an English speaker: mra on its own means "a woman" in general, whereas the possessed form always refers to the wife.

Example

مرتي راهي في الكوزينة تطيب.

marti rahi fel kouzina tteyyeb.

“My wife is in the kitchen, cooking.”
