mghyar مغيار
Moroccan Darija · adjective
“mghyar” (مغيار) is an adjective in Moroccan Darija meaning jealous (in love).
Meanings
- jealous (in love)
- envious, jealous of someone
Usage
Mghyar is used mostly for romantic or emotional jealousy: someone who cannot stand their partner talking to others. The feminine is mghyara, the plural mghyarin. The usual construction is mghyar 3la + person: "ana mghyar 3lik" means "I am jealous over you". The word is informal and very common, within the family and among friends, often in a teasing tone. It is close to the verb kaynghar (to be jealous). Pitfall for an English speaker: 3la marks the loved person one wants to keep for oneself, not the rival.
Example
راجلها مغيار بزاف، ما كيخليهاش تخرج بوحدها.
rajelha mghyar bzaf, ma kaykhallihach tkhrej b wehdha.
