milaf ملف

Moroccan Darija · noun

“milaf” (ملف) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning file (administrative).

Meanings

  1. file (administrative)
  2. case, issue being handled

Usage

The word milaf comes from standard Arabic and means "file" or "dossier". It is used in an administrative or media register: putting together a file, submitting your file, or talking about a political or legal affair, for example lmilaf dyal sa7ra. In everyday life, many Moroccans say the French word dossier instead, pronounced "dosi". The plural is malafat. Do not confuse it with the colloquial verb mellef / lellef, "to wrap up", and do not use it for a computer file, which is generally called fichier.
