mlyoun مليون
Moroccan Darija · numeral
“mlyoun” (مليون) is a numeral in Moroccan Darija meaning million.
Meanings
- million
- million centimes (ten thousand dirhams)
Usage
Mlyoun means "million". When talking about money, Moroccans very often count in centimes. In a conversation about a price or a salary, a mlyoun is therefore usually worth ten thousand dirhams, not a million dirhams. This is a classic pitfall for members of the diaspora. The plural is mlayn, but after joj the singular is often kept: joj mlyoun. For a price, the preposition b is used, as in b mlyoun, "for a million". It is also used hyperbolically for a large quantity.
Example
شرا طوموبيل بجوج مليون
chra tomobil b joj mlyoun
“He bought a car for two million (centimes).”
