Moroccan Darija · adjective
“mo3awwa9” (معوّق) is an adjective in Moroccan Darija meaning disabled, handicapped.
Meanings
- disabled, handicapped
Usage
Mo3awwaq (feminine mo3awwqa, plural mo3awwqin) refers to a person with a disability. It is the usual term, also heard in the media, for example in lmo3awwqin ("disabled people"). The word is neutral when used descriptively, but it can become hurtful when thrown as an insult. It is therefore best kept for factual contexts. In a more careful or administrative register, chakhs f wad3iyat i3aqa ("person with a disability") is preferred. A relaxed pronunciation, mo3a9, is also heard.
Example
خاص يكون بلاصة للناس المعوقين
khass ykun blassa l nnas lmo3awwqin
