mra مرا
Moroccan Darija · noun
“mra” (مرا) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning woman.
Meanings
- woman
- wife
Usage
This is the basic word for "woman" in darija. The plural is irregular: one says 3yalat or nsa. When followed by a possessive or a complement, mra becomes mrat, and it then takes the meaning of wife. Thus one says mrati (my wife), mratu (his wife) or mrat khoya (my brother's wife). The register is neutral. In some contexts the word can seem a little blunt, and l-madam or 3yalat is preferred. The expression "mra w nss" means a woman of character, an accomplished woman.
