mrekhi مرخي

Moroccan Darija · adjective

“mrekhi” (مرخي) is an adjective in Moroccan Darija meaning loose, slack, not taut.

Meanings

  1. loose, slack, not taut
  2. relaxed, laid-back, sluggish

Usage

Mrekhi first describes something loosened or not taut: a rope, a loose garment, a badly tightened screw. Applied to a person, it means relaxed, stress-free, even nonchalant or sluggish, depending on the tone: "rah mrekhi" can be a kindly observation or a reproach about lack of energy. The feminine is mrekhya, the plural mrekhyin. It is related to the verb rekhkha (to loosen, to slacken). Pitfall: it does not mean "cowardly"; other words are used for that.

Example

هاد الحبل مرخي بزاف

had l7bel mrekhi bzaf

“This rope is very loose.”
