mzawr مزوّر

Moroccan Darija · adjective

“mzawr” (مزوّر) is an adjective in Moroccan Darija meaning fake, counterfeit.

Meanings

  1. fake, counterfeit
  2. forged, falsified (document, signature)

Usage

Mzawwer applies to an object or document that imitates the original: a banknote, papers, a diploma, a signature, branded goods. It is often contrasted with 7a9i9i (genuine) or with "original", which is very common in darija. It agrees in gender and number: mzawra in the feminine, mzawrin in the plural (wra9 mzawrin, forged papers). The related verb is zawwer (to falsify). For a person, mzawwer means a forger, but the adjective is by far the most common use. Note: the source gloss "to falsify" does not refer to the verb here but to the result, i.e. "falsified". Neutral register, common in speech.
