nti نتي

Moroccan Darija · pronoun

“nti” (نتي) is a pronoun in Moroccan Darija meaning you (feminine singular).

Meanings

  1. you (feminine singular)
  2. you (masculine, in the North)

Usage

In most regions of Morocco, nti refers to a woman being addressed; for a man, you say "nta". In the North (Tangier, Tetouan, Jbala areas), nti is also used for a man, which can be confusing. The verb already carries the person marking, hence "nti fin ghadya?", "and you, where are you going?". The pronoun is therefore mainly used for emphasis or contrast, like "you" in English. The emphatic variant "ntiya" is also found.

How to write it in Latin letters

In Arabizi, Darija written in Latin letters, you will find “nti” but also “nty”, “ntiya” and “enti”. No spelling is official: people write the sounds as they hear them.
