nyech نيش
Moroccan Darija · verb
“nyech” (نيش) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to aim, line up a shot.
Meanings
- to aim, line up a shot
- to go straight to the point
Usage
Nyyech means to aim, to point at something precisely: in shooting, when throwing a ball or a stone, in games of skill. It is related to nichan, very common in darija for "the target" and for "straight, directly". It is often used after another conjugated verb, without a particle: t3llem nnyyech, "to learn to aim". The target is introduced with 3la: nyyech 3la, "to aim at something". The register is informal. For an English speaker, the pitfall is to carry over "to aim for a goal" in the abstract sense: nyyech remains mostly concrete and physical.
Example
كون غير قدرت نتعلم نيش
koun ghir 9dert nt3lm nyech
“If only I had been able to learn to aim.”
