sma سمّا
Moroccan Darija · noun
“sma” (سمّا) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning sky.
Meanings
- sky
- (verb smma) to name, call
Usage
Sma, very often pronounced with the assimilated article as ssma, means the sky: one says ssma 3amra bnjoum (the sky is full of stars) or chta tayha mn ssma (the rain is falling from the sky). The word is also used in religious or emphatic expressions such as mn ssma, "sent from heaven". The spelling with a shadda can also correspond to the verb smma, "to name, to give a name", which is a different word (smmah Ahmed, "he named him Ahmed"). The noun "first name, name" is rather smiya. Context resolves the ambiguity.
