sret صرط

Moroccan Darija · verb

“sret” (صرط) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning swallow in one gulp, gulp down.

Meanings

  1. swallow in one gulp, gulp down
  2. pocket, appropriate (figurative)

Usage

Sret means to swallow something in one go, without chewing: a medicine, a mouthful or, for an animal, a whole prey. The register is informal. You say sret l-kina ("he swallowed the tablet") or sret r-riq ("to swallow one's saliva"). Figuratively, the verb means to take money or someone else's property for oneself without giving it back, a bit like "to pocket". The present tense is formed like this: kaysret ("he swallows"). The word stresses the abrupt swallowing, whereas kla simply means "to eat".
