Meanings
- conclude, deduce
- draw a lesson from
Usage
Stentej is a verb borrowed from Standard Arabic. It is heard mostly in school, intellectual or media registers: marking exercises, debates, analyses. It takes a direct object (stentej chi haja) or men to indicate the source: stentej men had chi bli… ("to deduce from this that…"). In everyday speech, many speakers prefer fhem ("understand") or an explanatory phrase. The corresponding noun, stintaj, means "conclusion". Pronunciation pitfall: the initial st- takes no support vowel in front, except for some speakers who say istantej under the influence of Standard Arabic.
Example
شنو ستنتجتي من هاد التجربة؟
chnou stentejti men had tajriba?
“What did you conclude from this experiment?”
