Moroccan Darija · adjective

“stitna2i” (استثنائي) is an adjective in Moroccan Darija meaning exceptional, outstanding.

Meanings

  1. exceptional, outstanding
  2. exceptional, out of the ordinary

Usage

Stitna2i is an adjective borrowed from standard Arabic. It is used in a somewhat formal register: sports commentary, media, official announcements. It has two meanings. The first is "remarkable": "match stitna2i". The second is "outside the rule": "7ala stitna2iya" (exceptional case), "3otla stitna2iya" (special leave). The feminine is stitna2iya. In casual conversation, to praise something, people more readily say "wa3er", "khatir" or "nadi". Stitna2i therefore keeps a more serious or formal nuance.
