tanawi تانوي
Moroccan Darija · adjective
“tanawi” (تانوي) is an adjective in Moroccan Darija meaning secondary (education).
Meanings
- secondary (education)
- high school
Usage
Tanawi refers to secondary education, and in particular to high school in the Moroccan school system. The word comes from the official vocabulary of schooling, but it has entered everyday language: kayqra f tanawi, "he is in high school". The feminine tanawiya (lmadrasa tanawiya) and the expression tanawi taahili for the high-school cycle also occur. In conversation, many people simply say lycée, borrowed from French. Pitfall for an English speaker: tanawi is not used in the figurative sense of "of little importance". For that, one says machi muhim instead.
Example
ختي كاتقرا ف التانوي
khti katqra f ttanawi
“My sister is in high school.”
