tani تاني
Moroccan Darija · adjective
“tani” (تاني) is an adjective in Moroccan Darija meaning second.
Meanings
- second
- again, once more
- the other (of two)
Usage
Tani is the ordinal "second" in the masculine. The feminine is tanya. It comes after the noun, with the article if the noun is definite: lbab ttani, "the second door", or "the other door". After a verb, it takes the adverbial sense of "again": 3awd tani, "do it again". The word is very common in speech, in all registers. Pitfall for an English speaker: depending on context, ttani means "the other" rather than "the second". In a longer sequence, you also say lwel, ttani, ttalet.
Example
سالا شوت تاني
sala chawt tani
“The second half is over.”
