Meanings

  1. date (specific day)
  2. history (past, subject)

Usage

Tarikh has two common meanings in darija. In everyday life, it mainly means the date: tarikh dyal lyoum (today's date), tarikh lmilad (date of birth), achmen tarikh? (what date?). It also means history, in the sense of the collective past or the school subject: tarikh dyal lmghrib (the history of Morocco), lqraya dyal tarikh. The plural tawarikh is mainly used for "dates". Beware: tarikh never means a story in the sense of a tale or anecdote. For that, say qissa or hkaya.
