tchebbet تشبّت
Moroccan Darija · verb
“tchebbet” (تشبّت) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to cling, hold on to.
Meanings
- to cling, hold on to
- to stick to, not let go
- to insist stubbornly on an idea
Usage
The verb tchebbet is always constructed with b-, as in tchebbet b l-7bel, "he gripped the rope". Figuratively, it means to hold firmly to a person, a principle, a hope or an idea. Depending on context, it can also express stubbornness: ma ttchebbetch b had l-fikra means "don't be stubborn about this idea". The word is common and neutral. Avoid translating it as "to become attached" in the gentle emotional sense, since tchebbet suggests a firm, even desperate grip.
