tghelleb تغلّب

Moroccan Darija · verb

“tghelleb” (تغلّب) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to overcome, get past.

Meanings

  1. to overcome, get past
  2. to prevail over, defeat

Usage

This verb is always constructed with 3la: tghelleb 3la lkhof, to overcome fear, or tghelleb 3la lkhaSm, to beat the opponent. Its register is rather formal; in more colloquial speech, people readily say ghleb, "to beat", or dewwez, "to get through a hardship". It is often found in phrases of encouragement or in sports commentary. Be careful not to confuse it with qleb, "to turn over", whose arabizi spelling is close when the q is written g.
