tnazel تنازل

Moroccan Darija · verb

“tnazel” (تنازل) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to renounce, give up (a right).

Meanings

  1. to renounce, give up (a right)
  2. to yield, make a concession
  3. to drop a complaint

Usage

Tnazel is almost always constructed with 3la: "tnazel 3la l-7a9 dyalo" (he gave up his right), "tnazel 3la d-da3wa" (he dropped his complaint). The word is common in legal, family or business contexts: inheritance, complaint, job, share of a property. It can also mean to yield out of generosity or to avoid a conflict: "tnazel lih 3la blastou" (he gave him his seat/place). The imperfective is ytnazel, and the corresponding noun is tanazol (renunciation, withdrawal). Note: it does not mean "to go down," which is hbet or nzel.
