Moroccan Darija · noun

“tran” (تران) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning train.

Meanings

  1. train

Usage

Tran is the adapted loan from French "train", and it is the usual word for this meaning in Morocco. You say "nakhod tran" (to take the train), "tran dyal Rbat" (the train to Rabat), "lma7ata dyal tran" (the train station). The word is often used without an article, or with the article: "ttran". Standard Arabic qitar is heard mainly in the media and official announcements, rarely in conversation. For the high-speed train, you hear "tran rapide" or "TGV", pronounced the French way. The plural is little used; people rather say "bzaf dyal tran".
