tred طرد

Moroccan Darija · verb

“tred” (طرد) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to kick out, throw out.

Meanings

  1. to kick out, throw out
  2. to fire, dismiss
  3. to expel from school

Usage

Tred means to chase someone out of a place or a group. It is very common for dismissals: tred men l-khedma (to fire), tred men l-medrasa (to expel from school). It readily takes a suffixed pronoun: tredni (he kicked me out), tredouh (they fired him). The passive is ttred (to be dismissed): ttred men l-khedma. The present tense is ytred. The register is neutral, and the verb is used for a person as well as for an animal being driven away. It does not mean "to shoot" or "to set on fire": the English gloss "fire" here must be understood as "to dismiss from a job".

Example

المدير طردني من الخدمة

l-mudir tredni men l-khedma

“The manager fired me from my job.”
