tsewe9 تسوق
Moroccan Darija · verb
“tsewe9” (تسوق) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to go shopping, go to the market.
Meanings
- to go shopping, go to the market
- shopping (noun, formal)
Usage
The verb tsewwe9 (past tsewwe9t, present kantsewwe9) means to go to the souk or the market to buy things: vegetables, provisions, clothes. One says tsewwe9t l-lyoum for "I did the shopping today". The same Arabic spelling is also used for the noun tasawwuq, "shopping", which comes from Standard Arabic and belongs more to the media and advertising. It can be mistaken for tsawe9, second person of sawe9, "to pay attention to, to care about", as in ma tsawe9ch "don't concern yourself with it". Only context distinguishes these forms.
Example
غادي نتسوق للدار قبل ما يتسد السوق
ghadi ntsewwe9 l-dar 9bel ma ytsedd souq
“I'm going to do the shopping for the house before the market closes.”
