Meanings
- awareness, consciousness-raising
- lucidity, maturity of mind
Usage
Wa3y belongs to a rather formal register. It is heard in debates, the media, discussions about society or politics, and among educated people. It appears in phrases like "ma 3ndouch l-wa3y" (he is not aware of things) or "l-wa3y dyal n-nas" (people's awareness). It is almost always used with the article (l-wa3y). It is not the word for "moral conscience": for that one says dmir instead. In casual conversation, a phrase with the verb fhem, to understand, is often preferred.
Example

khass nnas ykoun 3endhom l-wa3y
“People need to become aware.”
