wo9ouf وقوف

Moroccan Darija · noun

“wo9ouf” (وقوف) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning stopping, parking (of a vehicle).

Meanings

  1. stopping, parking (of a vehicle)
  2. standing

Usage

Wqouf is the verbal noun of the verb w9ef (to stop, to stand up, to stand). It is found mostly with the article, lwqouf, in road and administrative prohibitions: "mamnou3 lwqouf" (no stopping). The register is fairly formal, close to Standard Arabic: in everyday conversation, the verb is usually preferred, for example "w9ef hna" (stop here), or a phrase like "ma tw9efch". Keep in mind that the word covers both the idea of stopping and that of standing, depending on context.

Example

ممنوع الوقوف قدام الباب

mamnou3 lwqouf 9eddam lbab

“No parking in front of the door.”
