wret ورت

Moroccan Darija · verb

“wret” (ورت) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to inherit (property).

Meanings

  1. to inherit (property)
  2. to get (a trait) from someone

Usage

Wret means "to inherit". It is used mainly for family property: house, land, money. The person one inherits from is introduced by men: "wret men bbah" (he inherited from his father). The imperfective is ywret, kaywret. The corresponding noun is lwert, "inheritance". Inheritance matters between brothers and sisters are a frequent topic of conversation, often a contentious one. By extension, one can say one has "inherited" a character trait or a resemblance from a parent. The register is common.
