youm يوم

Moroccan Darija · noun

“youm” (يوم) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning day.

Meanings

  1. day
  2. one day, someday

Usage

Yum means "day". To say "the day" in everyday conversation, nhar is much more frequent: "had nhar" (that day), "nhar l-jem3a" (Friday). Yum is used mainly after a number ("khmstash l-yum", fifteen days; "3 iyam", three days), in expressions such as "l-yum" (today), and in more formal turns of phrase. Its plural is iyam. Note that "today" is l-yum, whereas to ask what day it is, people would rather say "ashmen nhar?".
