7allouf حلوف

Tunisian Derja · noun

“7allouf” (حلوف) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning wild boar.

Meanings

  1. wild boar
  2. pig, hog

Usage

7allouf means the wild boar, found in the forests of the north-west and hunted in some regions. More broadly, it also means the pig. "L7am 7allouf" refers to pork, eaten by only part of the population. The plural is 7allouf or 7lalif. Careful: applied to a person, the word becomes a strong insult aimed at filthiness or coarseness. It should therefore be avoided outside its animal sense. It is the only common word for "pig"; khanzir, from Standard Arabic, remains rare in speech.

Example

شفنا حلوف في الغابة.

chefna 7allouf fil ghaba.

“We saw a wild boar in the forest.”
