7awi حاوي

Tunisian Derja · noun

“7awi” (حاوي) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning thug, street guy.

Meanings

  1. thug, street guy
  2. streetwise hustler from working-class areas
  3. snake charmer

Usage

In Tunisian slang, 7awi refers to a young man from working-class neighbourhoods who lives off the street, small hustles and sometimes crime. The word is pejorative in the mouth of "respectable" people, but it is claimed with pride in rap and among football fans, where it expresses neighbourhood pride, toughness and resourcefulness. It is often associated with other street terms, such as qarnat or zantour. The older sense of "snake charmer", a public-square performer, also exists but is rarer. "Thug" or "neighbourhood tough guy" conveys the common meaning better than "charmer".

Example

هاك الحاوي ديما واقف في راس الحومة

hek el 7awi dima wa9ef fi ras el 7ouma

“That thug is always standing at the corner of the neighbourhood.”
