7dhari حذاري
Tunisian Derja · interjection
“7dhari” (حذاري) is an interjection in Tunisian Derja meaning beware of, watch out for.
Meanings
- beware of, watch out for
Usage
7dhari is a solemn warning. It is used mainly in speeches, the media, awareness campaigns and commentary on public issues. It is often constructed with "men": "7dhari men..." (beware of...). It can also be placed directly before a noun, as in "7dhari thawret ejjiya3" (beware the hunger revolt). The tone is grave, almost alarmist. In daily life, to warn someone of immediate danger, people rather say "rod belek". Do not confuse it with "7adhari" (civilized), which is sometimes written the same way in arabizi.
Example
حذاري من الثقة الزايدة
7dhari mel thi9a ezzeyda
“Beware of overconfidence.”
How to write it in Latin letters
In Arabizi, Darija written in Latin letters, you will find “7dhari” but also “hdhari”. No spelling is official: people write the sounds as they hear them.
Digits stand in for Arabic letters that have no Latin equivalent: 7 is ha (ح), a breathy h from the throat.
