7out حوت
Tunisian Derja · noun
“7out” (حوت) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning fish (animal, food).
Meanings
- fish (animal, food)
Usage
Hout is the usual word for "fish", both for the live animal and for the food bought at the market or cooked. It is often used as a collective noun: "chrit el-hout" (I bought fish). For a single fish, "houta" is used. The plural "hiten" is used for several species or several fish. Note: unlike Standard Arabic, where the word suggests rather a whale or a large fish, in Tunisia it means any fish. It appears in dishes such as "couscous bel-hout" or "chorba hout".
