9ouma قومة

Tunisian Derja · noun

“9ouma” (قومة) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning getting up, waking up.

Meanings

  1. getting up, waking up
  2. uprising, revolt

Usage

The noun 9ouma refers first to the moment of getting up, especially in the morning: "9oumet sbe7", the morning rising. It is often paired with noum, "sleep", to talk about the quality of one's nights: a bad sleep, a difficult waking. It derives from the verb 9am / y9oum, "to get up". In a more formal register, it can mean a collective uprising. Pitfall for an English speaker: it is not a verb; "I get up" is n9oum.

Example

قومة الصباح بكري تتعبني.

9oumet sbe7 bekri tet3abni.

“Getting up early in the morning tires me out.”
