adhen اذان
Tunisian Derja · noun
“adhen” (اذان) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning call to prayer.
Meanings
- call to prayer
- time of the call to prayer
Usage
Adhen means the call to prayer given by the muezzin (el mouddhen) from the mosque. People often specify which prayer is meant: "adhen el fjer", "adhen eddhor", "adhen el maghreb". During Ramadan, "adhen el maghreb" marks the moment to break the fast. The word also serves as a time marker: "m3a l'adhen" means "at the time of the call". The corresponding verb is "wedhen / ywedhen" (to give the call). Be careful not to confuse it with "wdhen" (ears): the standard expression "adhen sagheya" (attentive ears) belongs to a different word, of written origin.
Example
كي سمعت الأذان قمت نصلّي
ki sma3t el adhen, qomt nsalli
“When I heard the call to prayer, I got up to pray.”
