“allah” (الله) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning God, Allah.

Meanings

  1. God, Allah
  2. exclamation of admiration or emotion

Usage

Allah means God and comes up constantly in conversation, not only in a religious context. It appears in fixed formulas: "inchallah" (God willing), "allah ybarek" (God bless), "allah yechfih" (may God heal him), "allah yer7mou" (may God have mercy on his soul). Said on its own with a lengthened vowel, "allaaah!", it expresses admiration for a beautiful song or a delicious dish. The Tunisian pronunciation often sounds like "elleh" or "alla". English speakers should know that these formulas are ordinary politeness, also used by people who are not very observant.
