aman امان

Tunisian Derja · interjection

“aman” (امان) is an interjection in Tunisian Derja meaning please, I beg you.

Meanings

  1. please, I beg you
  2. mercy!
  3. safety, protection

Usage

At the start of a sentence, amén serves as an insistent plea, close to "please" or "I beg you": amén, jibli... (please, bring me...). The tone is more pressing or more affectionate than a simple '3aychek'. On its own, it can express a supplication: "mercy!". The sense of safety appears in set phrases such as fi amén Allah (in God's keeping, goodbye). Not to be confused with imén, "faith".

Example

أمان، حلّ الباب

amén, 7ell el bab

“Please, open the door.”
