bakya باكية
Tunisian Derja · noun
“bakya” (باكية) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning package, packaging.
Meanings
- package, packaging
- pack of cigarettes
Usage
Bèkya is an adapted loanword and very common. It refers to a packet of packaged goods: bèkya qahwa (pack of coffee), bèkya garo (pack of cigarettes), bèkya sokkor (pack of sugar). The plural is bèkyèt. Used on its own, it often means a pack of cigarettes. It is heard in the everyday register, at the grocery store as well as at home. Pitfall in writing: the same Arabic spelling can be read bākiya, "weeping" or "weeping (feminine)" in standard Arabic. Context resolves the ambiguity.
Example
جيبلي باكية قهوة من الحانوت
jibli bèkya qahwa mel 7anout
“Bring me a pack of coffee from the grocery store.”
