bit بيت

Tunisian Derja · noun

“bit” (بيت) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning room, bedroom.

Meanings

  1. room, bedroom
  2. shed, storage space (for animals, storage)

Usage

In Tunisia, bit means a room in a house, most often the bedroom, not the whole house. To talk about the house, you say dar. It is readily completed to specify the type of room: bit ennoum ("bedroom"), bit el 9o3ad ("living room"), bit essghar ("children's room"), bit erra7a ("toilet"). The word is also used for small sheds or shelters, as in bit edjej ("chicken coop"). The plural is byout. Pitfall: don't translate bit as "house", as you would in Standard Arabic.

Example

دخل لبيتو وسكّر الباب

dkhal l bitou w sakker el beb

“He went into his room and closed the door.”

How to write it in Latin letters
