di3aya دعاية

Tunisian Derja · noun

“di3aya” (دعاية) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning propaganda.

Meanings

  1. propaganda
  2. advertising, promotion

Usage

Di3aya refers above all to propaganda or orchestrated promotion. The word often has a pejorative sense: "di3aya bel faregh" is empty promotion, hype with nothing behind it. It is readily used to criticize the media, political parties or image campaigns. For commercial advertising, Tunisians more often say "pub" or, in a formal register, ich-har. The word is feminine. In "3mal di3aya l…", it means "to promote…". The nuance is closer to "propaganda" or "relentless hype" than to the neutral "advertising".

Example

هاذي الكل دعاية، ما تصدقهمش.

hedhi el kol di3aya, ma tsad9homch.

“All of this is propaganda, don't believe them.”
