“dinar” (دينار) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning dinar, Tunisian currency.
Meanings
- dinar, Tunisian currency
- money
Usage
The dinar is the Tunisian monetary unit. It is divided into a thousand millimes. In speech, people often count in millimes rather than dinars: alf ("thousand") means one dinar, and 5 alef means five dinars. In writing, the dinar is abbreviated "d" or "DT". The plural is dnenir, but after a number the singular is often kept: 30 dinar. In ads and online marketplaces, prices are simply written 750d. This system of counting in millimes often confuses the diaspora: a price quoted as "10 alef" is ten dinars, not ten thousand.
Example
قدّاش الكيلو؟ عشرة دينار.
9addech el kilo? 3achra dinar.
“How much is a kilo? Ten dinars.”
