estra7 ستراح

Tunisian Derja · verb

“estra7” (ستراح) is a verb in Tunisian Derja meaning to rest, take a breather.

Meanings

  1. to rest, take a breather
  2. to feel relieved, be at ease

Usage

Estrāḥ (yestrāḥ) means "to rest" after an effort or fatigue. One says estraḥ chwaya, "rest a little". It can also mean "to feel relieved, to have peace of mind" after a worry. One source attributes to it a euphemistic use meaning "to go urinate", but I have not verified this in current usage: it is best not to use it in that sense. The related verb rtāḥ has a similar meaning and is readily used for relief. The register is neutral, usable everywhere.

Example

استراح شوية، راك تعبت برشة

estra7 chwaya, rak t3ebt barcha

“Rest a little, you've gotten very tired.”
