fass فص
Tunisian Derja · noun
“fass” (فص) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning clove (of garlic).
Meanings
- clove (of garlic)
- stone of a ring, setting
- segment (of citrus)
Usage
Fass is used mostly in cooking in "fass thoum" (a clove of garlic); a recipe might call for "zouz fsous thoum", for example. The word also means the stone set in a ring ("khatem bel fass") and, more rarely, a segment of orange or mandarin. The usual plural is "fsous". It should not be confused with "fass", the city in Morocco, nor with the lobe in anatomy, which belongs to standard Arabic. The register is neutral and everyday.
Example
زيد فص ثوم في الصلصة.
zid fass thoum fel salsa.
“Add a clove of garlic to the sauce.”
