fivri فيفري

Tunisian Derja · noun

“fivri” (فيفري) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning February, second month of the year.

Meanings

  1. February, second month of the year

Usage

Fivri is the common name for the month of February in Tunisia. It is borrowed from French, like the other months of the usual calendar (janvi, mars, avril…), and is used both in speech and in administration. It is used without an article in dates: "fi fivri" (in February), "ekher fivri" (end of February), "l'khmsa fivri" (the fifth of February). The word is fully integrated and does not sound like tacked-on French. The month names of Eastern standard Arabic (chbat) are not used in Tunisian conversation. A French speaker will recognize the word by ear, but the pronunciation is simplified to "fivri".
