“fridha” (فريضة) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning obligatory prayer.
Meanings
- obligatory prayer
- prescribed religious obligation
- inheritance shares (plural)
Usage
A religious vocabulary word, used as is in derja. In conversation, el fridha mainly refers to the obligatory prayer, as opposed to supererogatory prayers (sunna, nafila). For example, one says "sallit el fridha" to indicate having performed the obligatory prayer, without the optional prayers. The plural fra'idh or fara'idh refers to religious obligations in general. In a more scholarly register, it also refers to the inheritance shares fixed by religious law. The register is neutral to elevated. It is not used for an ordinary obligation, such as homework or an administrative requirement.
