Meanings
- carrying, taking
- lifting, raising
- haughty ("hazz khachmou")
Usage
Hazz is the active participle of the verb hezz (to carry, take, bring along, lift). It describes an ongoing action or a state: "ena hazz el 9offa" (I am carrying the basket). It agrees in gender and number: hazza for the feminine, hazzin for the plural. The very common expression "hazz khachmou", literally "who lifts his nose", means "haughty, stuck-up". Figuratively, "hazz eddenya" means "someone who makes a huge racket". The verb hezz is the everyday Tunisian equivalent of "to carry" or "to take with you". Do not confuse it with the Standard Arabic verb meaning "to shake".
