Tunisian Derja · noun

“inqileb” (انقلاب) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning coup d'état.

Meanings

  1. coup d'état
  2. reversal, turnaround

Usage

Inqileb is mostly used in political vocabulary to mean a coup d'état: inqileb 3askari (military coup), mo7awlet inqileb (coup attempt). The word is very frequent in political discussions in Tunisia, where it also serves as a polemical accusation against a seizure of power judged illegitimate. Figuratively, it means a complete reversal of a situation or attitude. Not to be confused with the dialect verb tqleb or tenkleb (to overturn, to flip over), from the same root. For an accident, it is this verb that is used, not the noun.
