“jaw” (جو) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning atmosphere, mood.
Meanings
- atmosphere, mood
- party, good time
- weather
Usage
Jaw primarily means the atmosphere of a place or a moment: “jaw el 3id” (the atmosphere of Eid). With the verb 3mel, it means “to party” or “to liven things up”: “3malna jaw” (we had a great time). “Fiha jaw” describes a lively party. In youth slang, “jaw” on its own expresses enthusiasm: “jaw!” (awesome!). The sense of “the weather” also exists, but it is more neutral: “el jaw sa5oun” (it's hot). The word is very common, informal and positive. The gloss “element” is a mistake.
