Meanings

  1. prestige, social standing, influence
  2. for the sake of (in bjeh)

Usage

Jeh denotes a person's prestige or influence. It is often associated with wealth, as in ejjeh w el-mel (prestige and money). The most common expression is bjeh, especially bjeh rabbi. It is used to plead ("please, for the love of God") or to wish for something ("with God's help"). Beware of the homograph: the same spelling can also write the verb ja followed by the pronoun -h, "he came to him". For example, chkoun jeh? means "who came to see him?". Only context can decide between the two readings.
