Meanings
- long loose robe, djellaba
- jilbab (women's covering garment)
Usage
Jelbeb means a long, loose robe. In the traditional context, it is a man's garment worn with the chechia (or the 3ra9iya) and the burnous. It is often mentioned in descriptions of old-time dress or festive outfits. The same word is also used for the women's jilbab, the long religious garment that covers the body. The context tells the two meanings apart. The colour is often specified with fi: "jelbeb fel ak7al", a black jelbeb. It should not be confused with the jebba, the traditional Tunisian tunic, which is a different garment.
