jnen جنان

Tunisian Derja · noun

“jnen” (جنان) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning orchard, garden with trees.

Meanings

  1. orchard, garden with trees
  2. cultivated plot of land

Usage

Jnén means an orchard or a garden planted with fruit trees, often fenced, in the countryside or on the outskirts of towns. It is associated with olive, citrus and fig trees. The diminutive jnina, which is more frequent, is used for a small garden, including the one at a house. The plural is jnénét. The word belongs to the common register. Be careful not to confuse it with the Egyptian sense "madness, awesome", seen online in expressions like "7aja jnén": this sense is not Tunisian. In Tunisia, madness is rather mhabla or tbal.
