jra جرى
Tunisian Derja · verb
“jra” (جرى) is a verb in Tunisian Derja meaning to run.
Meanings
- to run
- to happen, take place
- to chase, run after someone
Usage
Jra (imperfective yéjri) is the common verb for "to run": yéjri koll sbe7 (he runs every morning). With wra (behind), it means "to run after", literally and figuratively: yéjri wra l-flous (he runs after money). It also has the sense of "to happen". The question chnoua jra? ("what happened?") is very common. Context is generally enough to tell the two senses apart. The imperative is ajri ("run!"). This verb should not be confused with jrat, which is its feminine past form ("she ran, it happened").
Example
جرى باش يلحق الكار.
jra bech yel7a9 el car.
“He ran to catch the coach.”
